Grand Fatilla: Global Shuffle (Grand Fatilla Records)
By David Luhrssen
Few groups can shift gears from one musical tradition to another with the grace of Grand Fatilla. Perhaps the many previous experiences and multi-ethnic backgrounds of its members give the Boston group a unique advantage. On its debut album, Global Shuffle, the band moves convincingly from the lively melancholy of the Balkans to the stately melancholy of tango, from trance to reels, without a hint of jet lag.
Tracks: Cigansko Oro; Five of Swords; Domenie; Alla Carpinese; Bebe; Sandansko Oro; Milonga para Lucia; Kasha; Fracanapa; Corrente; Southern Italian Medley; Little Church.
Personnel: Roberto Cassan: Accordion; Matt Glover: Electric Mandolin; Fabio Pirozzolo: Percussion and Voice; Mike Rivard: Double Bass and Sintir.
Additional Musicians: Claudio Ragazzi: Acoustic Guitar, 12 String Guitar, Cuatro Puertorriqueno on 5,7,9. Christian Cassan: Percussion: 1,2,34,9,11.

Some JJ Smyths jazz / blues events this week :
Monday 5th January : Donal Kirk and Anto Drennan Music 9.30pm (In the Bar) - No Cover Charge
Those of you who remember Sunday afternoons in Slattery's of Capel St and The Business, will remember Donal Kirk, one of the great vocalists who worked with the band over the years. Donal’s vocal while likened to the styling of Michael McDonald, this still does not do him justice. He is backed by Anto Drennan on guitar and together they explored a host of musical styles, from Lowell George Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Free, Bad Company, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Beatles, Bobby Bland, Vince Gill, Ray Charles, Etta James, Elvis, RyCooder, Dobie Gray, Guy Clarke, early ZZ Top, Dave Edmunds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Nelson to name but a few. Guitarist Anto Drennan is noted for his involvement with Genesis, Mike + the Mechanics and The Corrs whom he has played with throughout most of his career. He has also played with Clannad, Paul Brady, Moving Hearts, Davy Spillane and other well-known Irish bands and performers.
Wednesday 7th January : WHAT GIVES… Doors 8.30pm (Music 9pm) - Adm €10
Featuring Terence Taylor (guitar & vocals), Jake Curran (guitar), Leopoldo Osio (keyboards), Keith Duffy (bass) and Jason Duffy (drums).
Thursday 8th January : GOTCHA…!!! Doors 8.30pm (Music 9pm) - Adm €10
Featuring Lee Meehan (guitars & vocals), Bill Bergin (bass guitar), Mark Grist (drums) and Peter Roycroft (keyboards).
Gotcha has been around for over two years now playing the kind of music they'd always been listening to, and wanting to play for many years before. Here's just a flavour of the type of artists (mainly instrumental) whose music they play: YELLOWJACKETS, DAVE WECKL, LEVEL 42, BILLY COBHAM, LEE RITENOUR, JEFF BECK, HERBIE HANCOCK & OZ NOY. Certainly not for the faint-hearted, this music is vibrant, exciting, challenging and exhilarating, though this quartet makes it seem almost normal.... The musicians are all well known on the Irish circuit in various different manifestations of rock, pop, and swing outfits, but when Gotcha gets together, a different kind of strange chemistry invades the air. Find out for yourself!
Sunday 11th January : Louis Stewart Quartet www.louisstewart.net Doors 4.30pm (Music 5pm / Over 18’s) - Adm €10
With Louis Stewart (guitar), Myles Drennan (piano), Neil O'Loghlen (double bass) & Shane O’Donovan (drums).
