SPECTRUM: THUNDERBLENDER / CATHERINE SIKORA & BRIAN CHASE
An intimate free jazz double-header of two exceptionally innovative acts on Saturday night at SPECTRUM festival.

THUNDERBLENDER

Bringing the thunder to Spectrum’s Saturday night are Thunderblender, a Brussels based jazz/improv trio led by Irish saxophonist Sam Comerford.

Blending adventurous free improv wrapped in their trademark thunderous grooves and interspersed throughout with moments of fragile beauty, Thunderblender’s bassless horn-piano-percussion format, inspired by artists like Tim Berne and Henry Threadgill, have catapulted the band across the European Festival circuit over the past two years.

Collectively they are three of the most inventive and exciting musicians on the European scene evidenced by the fact that all have been awarded the "Toots Thielemans Award" in recent years, most recently, pianist Hendrik Lasure, himself a rising star with his Belgian duo SCHNTZL, who were the 12 Points Festival’s Belgian pick at the 2017 edition in Denmark. In the summer of 2017 Thunderblender wowed the jury at the Concours Tremplin Jazz d’Avignon, bestowing Comerford the award for best soloist. Their debut EP, "Last Minute Panic" was released in October 2017 on Honolulu Records.

Catherine Sikora & Brian Chase

Presented in association with Note Productions, the powerful duo of Catherine Sikora (tenor and soprano saxophones) and Brian Chase (drums) pairs up two distinguished voices working at the forefront of modern jazz. At once lyrical and powerful, dynamic and focused, their music opens itself to a wide emotional and conceptual range which in turn provides for a broad expressive palette.

Catherine's voice on her instruments offers an impressive breadth of tonal color, fashioning and re-contextualizing melody as it sings and weaves through its many journeys. Brian on drumset is just as apt to use texture in addition to rhythm to drive the music, setting the scene for unlimited possibilities. The duo's debut recording, untitled:after , is the result of playing and performing together for several years.

Saxophonist, improviser and composer Catherine Sikora was born and raised in West Cork, Self taught to begin with, she moved to New York City to study and play with great improvisers. She recently opened IMC’s BAN BAM festival with an outstanding solo performance.

Brian Chase is a drummer and composer living in Brooklyn. His diverse range of work includes that with Grammy nominated rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the community of the New York experimental music scene, and his solo project Drums & Drones.

He first hit the national charts in 1956 when he was just 13 with 'Why Do Fools Fall in Love'.
1970, In an interview with the New Musical Express, Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green talked about his plans to give all his money away. The following year Green confronted his accountant with a gun after he sent him an unwanted royalty check. The guitarist went to jail briefly before being transferred to an asylum and was committed to a mental hospital in 1973. He re- launched his career in the 90's.
1970, Led Zeppelin played a gig
in Copenhagen as The Nobs after Eva Von Zeppelin a relative of the airship designer threatened to sue if the family name was used in Denmark.

On February 14 around the year 278A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed.

Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270.

Throughout the centuries since Valentine received martyrdom there have been various basilicas, churches and monasteries built over the site of his grave. Many restorations and reconstructions took place at the site, therefore over the years. In the early 1800s such work was taking place and the remains of Valentine were discovered along with a small vessel tinged with his blood and some other artefacts.

In 1835 an Irish Carmelite by the name of John Spratt was visiting Rome. He was well known in Ireland for his skills as a preacher and also for his work among the poor and destitute in Dublin’s Liberties area. He was also responsible for the building of the new church to Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Whitefriar Street. While he was in Rome he was asked to preach at the famous Jesuit Church in the city, the Gesu. Apparently his fame as a preacher had gone before him, no doubt brought by some Jesuits who had been in Dublin. The elite of Rome flocked to hear him and he received many tokens of esteem from the doyens of the Church. One such token came from Pope Gregory XVI (1831-1846) and were the remains of Saint Valentine.
