Michael Janisch's Paradigm Shift - European Album Launch Tour www.whirlwindrecordings.com

Featuring: Michael Janisch (US/UK) - double & electric basses;
Jason Yarde (London) - soprano saxophone;
Paul Booth (London) - tenor saxophone;
Alex Bonney (London) - electronics/trumpet;
Cédric Hanriot (Paris) - piano/keys/synths;
Colin Stranahan (NYC) - drums

Whirlwind Recordings Showcase Event: All ticket buyers for this concert will receive a FREE 15-Track Whirlwind Recordings sampler album as well as a download card containing links for two FREE albums of Michael Janisch's previous albums Purpose Built and Banned in London

American bassist, composer, producer and record label owner Michael Janisch is one of the preeminent artists of his generation working in jazz and experimental musics. This October he releases his second solo recording Paradigm Shift and debuts his new sextet of the same name. Paradigm Shift is a double disc album featuring new original material (including disc one that is solely comprised of the 'Paradigm Shift Suite') composed by the leader with some choice originals by his bandmates. The music was initially recorded live by his acoustic quintet after a two-week European tour and was subsequently taken into the studio for post production augmentation by Janisch and electronics wizard Alex Bonney. Janisch's new band includes Bonney on the live shows thus pairing the acoustic quintet with real-time electronic manipulation, presenting an engaging sonic program of music that mixes contemporary jazz, electronica, funk, rock, punk and free improv alongside anthemic themes, otherworldly sounds and infectious grooves.

The rest of the Janisch's group features some of the most sought after, versatile and forward-looking artists of their generation in soprano saxophonist Jason Yarde (Sam Rivers, Hermeto Pascoal, Jazz Warriors), tenor saxophonist Paul Booth (Steve Winwood, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton), Grammy-award winning pianist Cédric Hanriot (Dianna Reeves, John Patitucci) and NYC -based drum phenom Colin Stranahan (Kurt Rosenwinkel, Herbie Hancock).

Janisch hit the international scene running with his 2010 debut Purpose Built that positioned him as one of the premier bassists/bandleaders of his generation. Bass Musician Magazine stated “Janisch is one of the few bass players out there who plays both electric and upright with equal facility, passion and musicality” while Jazz TImes Magazine called it "the complete package". After an intense touring schedule of the album's music he released two subsequent co-led projects with Aruan Ortiz (ft Greg Osby) & Lee Konitz to worldwide acclaim.

As a composer and bassist Michael Janisch has been known for his distinct virtuosity and a penchant for thematic material, attention to groove and a reverence for his past musical experiences. On Paradigm Shift Janisch deepens his own vision as an artist by expanding his compositional palette, propelling his music into new sonic terrain conceptually, harmonically, and rhythmically. A series of everyday (but nonetheless life changing) events have informed the music, including the birth of his two daughters and the sudden death of his brother Joseph.

"It's been much more organic on a composition level to just allow these new experiences to guide the writing process."

Janisch has increasingly became involved at the grass roots level in activism against corporate plutocracy, large-scale globalization, religious fanaticism, global warming & GMO products, as well as ongoing wars and state-sponsored aggression. "My first solo album was a presentation of what I had experienced on a musical level up to the point of release. With Paradigm Shift I've had so many extra-musical events occur it was life that informed and inspired this new music. It's been much more organic on a composition level to just allow these new experiences to guide the writing process. I've not written music and subsequently grafted some personal, social or political cause on top of it; rather it was the emotions I've experienced that guided me to generate the sounds, colors and rhythms that eventually led to the music on the record. It's all been a much more holistic and fulfilling writing process."

“Awesomely virtuosic double bass”

The Guardian

“Michael Janisch is a commanding bassist, who brings a sinewy thrust to the ensemble with masterful agility.”

Downbeat Magazine

“Janisch seizes the instrument with a blend of speed and energy as if he wants to be melody, harmony and rhythm all at once.”

The Telegraph

“Janisch is one of the few bass players out there who plays both electric and upright with equal facility, passion and musicality.”

Ireland’s foremost producer of jazz and ethnic music, Improvised Music Company host ‘pop-up’ jazz club STRUT on the Peacock stage of the Abbey Theatre this November, with an exciting programme of top-level international and Irish acts.

From New Yorks ‘Village Vanguard’ to London’s ‘Ronnie Scott’s’, the quintessential jazz club has always been at the fulcrum of urban musical creativity. The intimate setting and dynamic between audience and musician make the jazz club the heart of every city’s scene. This November it is Dublin’s turn to dig that vibe, that energy, and that incomparable jazz club atmosphere as STRUT takes to the Peacock stage, offering Dubliners an intimate journey of jazz discovery.

Opening the Club on Wednesday 18th November with some gloriously funky fusion is Danish organ trio Ibrahim Electric, with their intoxicating and unique blend of funk, groove and Afro Beat.

Thursday night sees some of our finest Irish jazz exports in collaboration with exciting young talents from the European scene. Lauren Kinsella’s exceptional art-rock group Blue-Eyed Hawk take license from the poetry of Yeats to create an utterly refreshing soundscape. The late show on Thursday will be a new venture from a trio bearing one of the most regarded names in Irish jazz, as a trifecta of Guilfoyle’s - Ronan, Conor and Chris - present their rhythmically adventurous approach to improvisation as 3G, in concert with a rising star on trumpet, Gerhard Ornig, from Austria.

And it’s not only the Yeat’s references that tie this Pop-Up Jazz Club to our National Theatre. One of the STRUT highlights is the return of Irish jazz guitar legend Louis Stewart to the Peacock stage, 36 years after the live recording of the seminal album Alone Together on those very boards.

Considered “one of the instruments world-class players” (Downbeat magazine), Stewart will be joined once again by esteemed flautist Brian Dunning for a reprise of their seminal 1979 live recording, with guest bassist Neil O’Loghlen for what promises to be a captivating trio performance.
