‘Draksler brings austerity, subtlety and poignancy with her fluid piano playing and rings through in bright, rich textures’ - The Irish Times

Ireland first encountered the young Slovenian pianist/composer Kaja Draksler when she performed a stunning set with her ‘Acropolis Quintet’ at the 12 Points festival in May 2011.
Still only 27 years old, Kaja is an exceptional talent, presenting both remarkable classical composition as well as energetic and risky improvisation. Last year she released her solo album The Lives Of Many Others, on the renowned label Clean Feed.
Apart from writing for her own ensembles, Draksler has also been commissioned to write for Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra, EMJO, Big Band RTV Slovenia and Italian Instabile Orchestra.

Ian Shaw (UK) with The Phil Ware Trio JJ Smyths Saturday 31st. January 2015 jjsmyths.com

Award winning jazz vocalist Ian Shaw makes his welcome return to JJ Smyth's to perform with The Phil Ware Trio. Featuring Ian Shaw – voice, Phil Ware – piano, Dave Redmond – bass and Kevin Brady – drums. This will be a highly charged evening as superb vocalist meets Ireland's leading piano trio.

Their original musical meet-up was at the Galway Jazz Festival in 2006; Phil invited Ian back to guest with the trio in Dublin in 2007, and RTÉ Lyric FM reunited them later that year for The Blue of the Night Live, broadcast from the Dublin Fringe Festival. Ian calls the Trio a ‘dream band’, and their collaboration has continued with many appearances in Ireland and the UK, including Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express Jazz Club in London. Phil also features on Ian’s highly acclaimed 2010 recording The Abbey Road Sessions.

Twice winner of the BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist, and with over a dozen highly acclaimed albums to his name, Ian Shaw has been described as one of the most distinctive, original and creative jazz singers on the scene. Alongside his own projects, he is much in demand as the featured soloist with big bands and orchestras, both in the UK and internationally, in addition to his long-term pairings with the likes of Guy Barker, Liane Carroll and Claire Martin.

“Praised far and wide as the greatest male jazz singer Britain has to offer” - Jazz Times

Dublin Unitarian Concert series 2015.

Dublin Unitarian Church presents
Spring Journey 2015
A musical voyage to warm you up after the cold winter !!!
In 2009, the Unitarian Church on St. Stephen’s Green in the city centre of Dublin unveiled ambitioius
plans to restore and upgrade their 1911 JW Walker pipe organ to bring it to the highest modern recital
and worship standards under the craftsmanship of Irish organbuilder Trevor Crowe. Since then, the
congregation have worked hard to raise €250,000 to finance this work. They are making good headway
but there is a little more to be done. The actual work will be finished in September 2015.
In 2014, the Spring Journey concert season was started as a presentation of high quality music in a
relaxed, enjoyable setting – all capped off by the satisfaction of raising money for this worthy cause.
The musicians are not household names but they are more than worth hearing. You will want to come
back and hear them again. It was successful and the second season runs from February through May
2015. We invite you to support by attending one or more of the concerts, or helping us spread the word
in the media, online or by word of mouth.
The concerts are
Friday February 27th @ 8pm
Mongoose – Original songs, Harmonies aplenty, Folk & Pop all at the same time.

William Shakespeare

Blow, blow, thou winter wind
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.

Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship if feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.

Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky,
That does not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As a friend remembered not.
Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.

Fuzzy Logic is Ireland’s largest and longest-running big band – or ‘contemporary improvising ensemble’ as composer and founder Dylan Rynhart prefers to describe the group. This distinction is important. ‘Big band’ can connote music of the swing era or a conventional reeds-and-brass, riffs-and-solos approach that is far from Fuzzy Logic’s sound range and musical vocabulary. Yet the band is very much part of a jazz tradition that goes back to Duke Ellington, using extended forms and varied instrumentation to create a broad range of sonorities and textures. Not active just now I believe as they are all pursuing other projects.

1. Cigansko Oro ( 4.52 ) - Grand Fatilla - CD Global Shuffle Grand Fatilla Records
2014 RELEASE

MONDAY, SEPT. 8, 2014 REVIEW
Grand Fatilla: Global Shuffle (Grand Fatilla Records)
By David Luhrssen

Few groups can shift gears from one musical tradition to another with the grace of Grand Fatilla. Perhaps the many previous experiences and multi-ethnic backgrounds of its members give the Boston group a unique advantage. On its debut album, Global Shuffle, the band moves convincingly from the lively melancholy of the Balkans to the stately melancholy of tango, from trance to reels, without a hint of jet lag.

Tracks: Cigansko Oro; Five of Swords; Domenie; Alla Carpinese; Bebe; Sandansko Oro; Milonga para Lucia; Kasha; Fracanapa; Corrente; Southern Italian Medley; Little Church.

Personnel: Roberto Cassan: Accordion; Matt Glover: Electric Mandolin; Fabio Pirozzolo: Percussion and Voice; Mike Rivard: Double Bass and Sintir.

Additional Musicians: Claudio Ragazzi: Acoustic Guitar, 12 String Guitar, Cuatro Puertorriqueno on 5,7,9. Christian Cassan: Percussion: 1,2,34,9,11.

Monday 5th January : Donal Kirk and Anto Drennan Music 9.30pm (In the Bar) - No Cover Charge
Those of you who remember Sunday afternoons in Slattery's of Capel St and The Business, will remember Donal Kirk, one of the great vocalists who worked with the band over the years. Donal’s vocal while likened to the styling of Michael McDonald, this still does not do him justice. He is backed by Anto Drennan on guitar and together they explored a host of musical styles, from Lowell George Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, Free, Bad Company, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Beatles, Bobby Bland, Vince Gill, Ray Charles, Etta James, Elvis, RyCooder, Dobie Gray, Guy Clarke, early ZZ Top, Dave Edmunds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Nelson to name but a few. Guitarist Anto Drennan is noted for his involvement with Genesis, Mike + the Mechanics and The Corrs whom he has played with throughout most of his career. He has also played with Clannad, Paul Brady, Moving Hearts, Davy Spillane and other well-known Irish bands and performers.

Featuring Lee Meehan (guitars & vocals), Bill Bergin (bass guitar), Mark Grist (drums) and Peter Roycroft (keyboards).
Gotcha has been around for over two years now playing the kind of music they'd always been listening to, and wanting to play for many years before. Here's just a flavour of the type of artists (mainly instrumental) whose music they play: YELLOWJACKETS, DAVE WECKL, LEVEL 42, BILLY COBHAM, LEE RITENOUR, JEFF BECK, HERBIE HANCOCK & OZ NOY. Certainly not for the faint-hearted, this music is vibrant, exciting, challenging and exhilarating, though this quartet makes it seem almost normal.... The musicians are all well known on the Irish circuit in various different manifestations of rock, pop, and swing outfits, but when Gotcha gets together, a different kind of strange chemistry invades the air. Find out for yourself!
