THE NECKS
Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin 8
Friday 3rd October . Doors 8:00pm
The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia.

Together for 25 years the Australian trio, The Necks, have enthralled audiences worldwide with their compelling style of improvisation. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms, not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, their music is regularly described internationally as, simply, unique.

Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, the sixteen albums by The Necks stand up to re-listening time and time again. The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing.

"One of the greatest bands in the world" New York Times

In recent years, along with their regular international touring, The Necks have been invited by Nick Cave to appear at All Tomorrows Parties and collaborated with Brian Eno in PURE SCENIUS at Sydney Opera House and Brighton Festival. They have also composed for film and perform with Back To Back Theatre Company. Their albums and scores have won numerous awards.

CHRIS ABRAHAMS piano
Chris was born in Oamaru, New Zealand but grew up in Sydney, Australia. He became very active in the Sydney jazz scene in the early eighties playing with modern jazz groups including Mark Simmonds’ Freeboppers and The Keys Music Orchestra. With Lloyd Swanton he formed the 60’s modern jazz-influenced The Benders in 1982, releasing three albums - E, False Laughter and Distance. He was also a founding member of the indie rock band The Sparklers. Chris also began working regularly with the singer and songwriter Melanie Oxley – releasing five albums: Resisting Calm (1990), Welcome to Violet (1992), Coal (1994), Jerusalem Bay (1998) and Blood Oranges (2003).

Chris has also released numerous solo piano albums including Piano (1984), Walk (1986), Glow (2001), Streaming (2003) and Thrown (2004). Chris has collaborated, in both recording and performance, with many contemporary improvising musicians including Evan Parker, Burkhard Beins, Mike Cooper and Anthony Pateras. He performs regularly in the improvising music scenes both in Australia and Europe.

TONY BUCK drums
Born in Sydney in 1962, Tony is regarded as one of Australia's most creative and adventurous exports, with vast experience across the globe. He has been involved in a highly diverse array of projects. Apart from The Necks, he is probably best known as leader of hardcore/impro band PERIL.

Early in his musical life, after having graduated from the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, he became very involved in the jazz scene in Australia, often touring with visiting international artists such as Vincent Herring, Clifford Jordan, Mickey Tucker, Branford Marsalis and Ernie Watts, as well as Australians Mark Simmonds, Paul Grabowsky, The catholics, Sandy Evans and Dale Barlow. Following time spent in Japan, where he formed PERIL with Otomo Yoshihide and Kato Hideki, Tony moved to Europe, and has involved himself in many projects there, including the development of new "virtual" MIDI controllers at STEIM in Amsterdam.

Tony has played, toured or recorded with, among others, Jon Rose, Nicolas Collins, Tenko, John Zorn, Tom Cora, Phil Minton, Haino, Switchbox, The Machine for Making Sense, Ne Zhdall, The EX, Peter Brotzmann, Hans Reichel, The Little Red Spiders, Subrito Roy Chowdury, Clifford Jordan, Kletka Red, Han Bennink, Shelley Hirsch, Wayne Horvitz, Palinckx, and Ground Zero, and tours regularly in his duo with Magda Mayas.

LLOYD SWANTON bass
Described by Billboard Magazine as "an outstanding and imaginative Australian bassist and composer", Lloyd is a three-time winner of Best Bassist in the Australian Jazz and Blues Awards.

His long-running group, The catholics, has released eight albums, all produced and predominantly composed by him, with three receiving ARIA Award nominations. He has also composed film and TV scores, including The Beat Manifesto, winner of an Australian Guild of Screen Composers Award for Best Short Film Soundtrack.

International artists with whom he has performed throughout Australia include Dewey Redman, Nat Adderly, Clifford Jordan, Vincent Herring, Sting, Jimmy Witherspoon, Margie Evans, Sheila Jordan, Billy Harper, Barney Kessel, Andrew Hill, George Coleman Jr., John Hicks & Carlos Ward, Darrell Grant, Gary Bartz, Phillip Johnston, Jim Black, Tobias Delius, Marilyn Crispell and Molly Ringwald. He has toured extensively in over 40 countries with numerous groups includes countless performances throughout Europe, Canada, the USA, Mexico, India, Cuba, New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand and Japan.

Lloyd appears on over 100 albums, including several ARIA Award winners, and has produced four ARIA Award winners by Bernie McGann. Over 80 of his compositions or co-compositions appear on record.

"...Entirely new and entirely now...They produce a post-jazz, post-rock, post-everything sonic experience that has few parallels or rivals. They may teach us to listen in a new way, but they communicate a fierce energy and warmth at the same time. Their music is a thrilling, emotional journey into the unknown. Like seeing a world in a grain of sand, The Necks permit us to hear a whole new world of music in a sliver of sound"
THE GUARDIAN

"(The Necks) draw your attention to the music instead of the means: you never get the idea that they're playing for an hour to prove that they can do it, or to showcase a glut of ideas, but simply to give you the pleasure of focusing on music in extreme detail"
PITCHFORK

"It is a fairly safe bet to say that no other group in the world sounds quite like The Necks...extraordinary empathy and discipline"
THE TIMES (UK)

"Absolutely riveting...how three musicians can sound like eighteen is a mystery... extraordinary magical sounds emerged from the ensemble...the way The Necks do this with acoustic instruments is nothing short of miraculous"
Financial Times

"One of the greatest bands in the world"
New York Times

Louis Moholo-Moholo & Alexander Hawkins
Louis Moholo-Moholo - drums, percussion
Alexander Hawkins - piano

Musical fireworks are guaranteed from an intercontinental meeting between the intense piano improvisations of Alexander Hawkins and the extraordinary dynamic range of South African percussionist Louis Moholo-Moholo, who played a pivotal role in the influential community of South African exiles who transformed the evolution of British creative music from the ‘70s.

Though representing two different generations of musician – the one, an established master and veteran of numerous seminal recordings and bands in the history of the music; the other, a member of a much younger generation, but whose audacious and far-reaching musical vision marks him as a major force in today’s scene – South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo and English pianist Alexander Hawkins have developed a special rapport over the past years.

Their duo captures an always-passionate mix of free jazz, South African melodies, Ellington and much else besides.

The partnership as heard on the album Keep Your Heart Straight – already hailed as a classic in waiting - is wonderfully translated to the stage with these live dates, and represents a special opportunity to see this brilliantly creative pairing in full flow.

“In the rich jazz history of an old lion making inspired new music with a young one, ‘Keep Your Heart Straight’ deserves a very prominent place on the podium.” - John Fordham, liner notes, Keep Your Heart Straight

“Hawkins doesn’t hold back, whether soloing with explosive power or extrapolating complex compositional structures from Moholo-Moholo’s rhythm metrics, he’s on imperious form.

Moholo-Moholo meanwhile carries the rhythm like a burning coal and keeps it smouldering.

Between the fireworks, however, Hawkins does find time for close communion with his senior partner, in ruminations of hymn-like solemnity.” -Tim Owen, Dalston Sound
