Conor Guilfoyle Octet performs Miles Davis's BIRTH OF THE COOL in a series of concerts in Ireland between 20th February and 4th July 2020. Allen Smith joins me on the show this time to discuss this series and illustrate with tracks chosen by himself.

1. The Album "Birth of the Cool". Track 1 Move composed by Denzil Best 2.33.



2. The album "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud" the film "Lift to the scaffold" to which Miles Davis wrote and performed the sound track music, with an excellent band. Track 04 Julien dans l'asceneur 2:12. This was chosen to show the diversity of projects in which Miles Davis became involved.

3. The Album "New Hat" by the Fuzzy Logic Ensemble with Bill Blackmore and Colm O'Hara. Track 1 Happy New Year 3:37. A piece with two members of the octet.



4. The Album "Trio" Mike Nielsen, Ronan Guilfoyle and Conor Guilfoyle Track 7 It's Only A Paper Moon 4.28. I chose this standard because it is one of my favourites.

5. The Album "Descarga Saoco" by Saoco with Conor Guilfoyle Track 6 i que viva to' lo' rumberos! 3:38. I chose this as an example of Conor's great love of music from South America and to show that he has other strings to his bow.

6. The Album "My Guess" by Thought Fox with Colm O'Hara Track 4 Worm of Thought 4:57. A sample of Colm's playing.

7. The Album "sundials" by THE IMPROVISED MUSIC ENSEMBLE (TIME) with Conor Guilfoyle Track 9 this piece is brought to you by the letter w 5:51. This is also an eight piece band that was put together by the Improvised Music Company. This piece was composed by Brian Wynne.

8. The Album "KARST by Ellen Cranitch with Conor Guilfoyle Track 1 karst 3:54. This album has Conor performing in another setting with music composed by Ellen Cranitch.
