Scott Flanigan Quartet featuring Meilana Gillard

Emerging Belfast pianist Scott Flanigan made a name for himself as a side-man for demanding taskmasters including Van Morrison, before stepping out of the shadows with his own hard-hitting piano trio a number of years ago.

Now with a new project and new music, Flanigan has found his foil in a quartet setting alongside hugely talented saxophonist Meilana Gillard.

The Ohio-raised tenor saxophonist first emerged in the early 2000s as a rising star of the New York scene. She was a member of the all-female big band Diva, and worked with a host of heavyweights including Christian McBride and Greg Osby, who released her debut album Day One on his Inner Circle Music label in back in 2009.

A thoughtful pianist and arranger who acknowledges the influence of the great Brad Mehldau in his approach, Flanigan’s is establishing himself as one of the bright new jazz pianists on this island.

Mary Stokes Band Upcoming Concert

Following her recent successes in America, blues singer extraordinaire Mary Stokes returns to the Dublin stage with a special appearance at The Wild Duck, Sycamore Street, on Sunday April 14th, from 5 -7 pm.

Directly facing the famous stage door of the Olympia Theatre, The Wild Duck has fast become one of the city’s most popular new music venues. The timing seems perfect for the Mary Stokes Band’s long anticipated return to the familiar territory of their blistering Sunday evening blues sessions for which they are so well known.

Invigorated by the dynamism and energy recently brought to the band by the exceptionally talented musician Sarah Michelle on guitar and vocals, Mary Stokes and her band have been recording new songs destined for release later this year. Irish fans have the opportunity to hear them first as Mary and Sarah, ably aided and abetted by Brian Palm, Chris Byrne and Robbie Barrett, unleash them in the Wild Duck on the evening of April 14th.’

SUNDAY 4 September 1949 will long be remembered by Laois hurling fans as a dark day in the county’s sporting history, when Tipperary beat the O’Moores by 3-11 to 0-3 in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park.

That game still rankles with many. But from the ashes of gloom rose an association that’s still thriving today.

Seventy years ago, when the hurlers were powering their way out of Leinster and looking unstoppable, a group of people from the O’Moore county who were living in Dublin got together to form the Laois Association. Whatever the outcome of the All-Ireland final, the players, their families, friends and supporters weren’t going home without having some sort of celebration. The association booked the prestigious Gresham Hotel and by all accounts it was a night to remember.

Throughout ’49, when the hurlers were fancied to raise the McCarthy Cup, the group worked tirelessly to raise funds for the post-match event. One of those people was 17-year-old Bridie Mulhall from Ballylinan, who had just arrived in the big smoke.

Over the past 70 years, Bridie and her husband Colm Healion from Mountmellick have served the association in a number of key roles. To mark their outstanding achievement, dedication and service, they will receive the Laois Association Dublin Lifetime Achievement Award. Other notables to have won the accolade include former GAA president Liam O’Neill and minister Charlie Flanagan.

That the association has thrived throughout its 70-year history is testament to its past and present members, committees, officers and Laois County Council. Renamed the Laois Association Dublin, it now serves as a social and cultural outlet for Laois natives living and working in the capital. New members are always appreciated and will be assured of a warm welcome.

Previous milestone anniversaries have been held at Croke Park, but to mark the 70th birthday, the association returns to the Gresham Hotel on Sunday 7 April for lunch and entertainment.

The celebratory event is open to members and non-members. Tickets are limited and are priced at €50 each. For more details, contact Gerry Thompson on 087 9547389 or email laoisdublin@eircom.net.
