Jazz Scene No. 72 Saturday 8th. November 2014 5 to 6PM GMT on dublincityfm.ie

Sad to hear the news that Acker Bilk has died ( Born 28th. January 1929 - Died 2nd. November 2014 ). Jazz Scene No. 72 pays tribute & features some Acker Bilk tracks this time.

Paddy Cole said he has left a "lasting legacy" in the world of jazz.

"The last time I played Stranger on the Shore was at the Albert Reynolds funeral in August," he said. John Major came over to me after the performance and complimented me on it, and said it was one of his favourite pieces of music.

"Acker came to Ireland quite a few times and absolutely loved it here. In the early days, English jazz bands were considered pop stars in Ireland. They played the big ballrooms and packed them out every time.

"He was a great character, a wonderful raconteur, and all-round jazz man."

Bilk's final concert performance was in August last year.

Thursday 13th November : Hugh Buckley Group Doors 8.30pm (Music 9pm) - Adm €10 JJ Smyths, Aungier Street, Dublin 2.
Hugh Buckley may be among the more unassuming guitarists on the Irish scene, but his resume of international associations speaks volumes for the esteem in which he's held elsewhere. This engaging and creative soloist has worked with Georgie Fame, Peter Bernstein, Scott Hamilton, Peter Washington and his late and dear friend, pianist James Williams. Soul and gospel nuances are increasingly to the fore and for this outing, he unveils new material and new personnel, performed by a talented quartet with Dan Bodwell (bass), Domnic Mullan (drums) and TBC (piano).

Sunday 16th November JJ Smyths Aungier St. D.2 : Olivia Trummer – FLY NOW Album Launch Doors 4.30pm (Music 5pm / Over 18’s) - Adm €12
Olivia Trummer will be playing very special event in JJ's. she is in Dublin to open for Jazz superstar Charles Lloyd on Tuesday 18th November. This is a great opportunity to see this sensational singer/songwriter composer who has been dubbed the Norah Jones of Europe. Olivia is a native of Germany but she has divided her time over the last number of years between New York and Berlin. She is a recipient of the German Young Musician of the year award on five occasions and she has performed in venues as illustrious as Carnegie Hall and performed with notable artists such as Bobby McFerrin and Jimmy Cobb. Olivia first appeared in Ireland at the 12 Points Festival in February 2013. She went on to do a tour of Ireland in October that year which was a phenomenal success. She is joined on stage by Dave Redmond on Bass and Kevin Brady on drums. This is a wonderful chance to see her perform in the intimate surrounds of JJ Smyth's before she takes to the main stage in the NCH a couple of nights later.
