IRISH ARTIST - 2018 RELEASE
To celebrate Seachtain na Gaelige and Bliain na Gaeilge, Jim McHugh will release a new song entitled ‘An Muc Snámha’ on 6th of March 2018. Jim McHugh comes from Castleblayney Co. Monaghan and the name Muckno is synonymous with the town, and is attached to the beautiful lakes and to the parish itself. The name Muckno is derived from the legend of ‘an Muc Snámha’ (the swimming pig). The legend depicts St. Maeldoid who decided to build a new monastery on the opposite side of Muckno lake. After his hard labour each day, St. Maeldoid would return the next morning to find his stone walls all knocked down. The legend describes a black pig (an muc dubh) swimming across the lake at night to destroy St. Maeldoid’s work. The legend attests the black pig was the devil (an diabhal) himself.

Sina Theil is on a mission to put Rock into Irish Country! All going well she joins me this time on Midweek Music Miscellany for a chat, possible live music & tracks from Sina plus her picks from music which inspires her.

Originally from Germany, Sina Theil started playing piano and writing songs at the age of 7, picking up a guitar at 18 and since flourishing into an accomplished recording artist. Sina left Germany for Spain where she played with a local Spanish band and recorded her first few demos, before finally arriving in Dublin to pave her career on the Irish music scene and becoming a student at BIMM. While making her way busking on the streets of Dublin, she gained experience in live performance as the front-woman of a rock group.

In 2017 Sina was signed to Downda Road Productions and has since scored three #1 singles in the Irish Country Download Charts.

March 7th: On this day
1953, Guy Mitchell was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'She Wears Red Feathers'. The song details a bizarre story of an English banker's love for a hula-hula girl.
1962, The Beatles recorded their first radio appearance, at the Playhouse Theatre, Hulme, Manchester, for the BBC radio program Teenager's Turn - Here We Go'. After a rehearsal, the Beatles put on suits for the first time and, along with the other artists appearing on the program, record the show in front of a teenage audience.

1965, During a Rolling Stones gig at The Palace Theatre in Manchester, England a female fan fell from the circle while the group were playing. The crowd below broke her fall and the girl escaped serious injury just breaking a few teeth.
1966, Mike Millward guitarist from The Fourmost died, aged 23. The Liverpool group who were managed by Brian Epstein had the 1964 UK No.6 single 'A Little Loving'.
1966, Brian Wilson released 'Caroline No' the first solo single by a Beach Boy. Before it evolved into the final song we know today, (Wilson's recording reappeared as the final track on the Beach Boys' studio album Pet Sounds). The song was originally written as 'Carol I Know'.
1966, Tina Turner recorded her vocal on the Phil Spector produced 'River Deep Mountain High'. It went on to make No.3 in the UK but only No.88 on the US chart. Spector was well aware of Ike Turner's controlling attitude in the studio, and therefore he drafted an unusual contract: the River Deep – Mountain High album and single would be credited to Ike & Tina Turner, but Ike was paid $20,000 to stay away from the studio, and only Tina Turner's vocals would be used on the record. Session musicians who played on the track included Leon Russell (keyboards), Glen Campbell (guitar), and Hal Blaine (drums).
1967, Working on their next album The Beatles recorded additional overdubs for 'Lovely Rita', including harmony vocals, effects, and the percussive sound of a piece of toilet paper being blown through a haircomb.
1969, Led Zeppelin appeared at the Bluesville 69 Club at the Hornsey Wood Tavern, Finsbury Park, London, England. The venue was a function room at the back of the pub, and was so small that the stage was only just big enough for John Bonham's drums, and the rest of the group had to stand on the floor at the same level as the crowd.

1970, Lee Marvin was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Wand'rin Star', taken from the film 'Paint Your Wagon.'
1970, Simon and Garfunkels album Bridge Over Troubled Water started a ten week run at No.1 on the US chart. The duo had split-up by the time of release.

IMC and Note Productions
SPECTRUM: THUNDERBLENDER / CATHERINE SIKORA & BRIAN CHASE
An intimate free jazz double-header of two exceptionally innovative acts on Saturday night at SPECTRUM festival.

THUNDERBLENDER

Bringing the thunder to Spectrum’s Saturday night are Thunderblender, a Brussels based jazz/improv trio led by Irish saxophonist Sam Comerford.

Blending adventurous free improv wrapped in their trademark thunderous grooves and interspersed throughout with moments of fragile beauty, Thunderblender’s bassless horn-piano-percussion format, inspired by artists like Tim Berne and Henry Threadgill, have catapulted the band across the European Festival circuit over the past two years.

Collectively they are three of the most inventive and exciting musicians on the European scene evidenced by the fact that all have been awarded the "Toots Thielemans Award" in recent years, most recently, pianist Hendrik Lasure, himself a rising star with his Belgian duo SCHNTZL, who were the 12 Points Festival’s Belgian pick at the 2017 edition in Denmark. In the summer of 2017 Thunderblender wowed the jury at the Concours Tremplin Jazz d’Avignon, bestowing Comerford the award for best soloist. Their debut EP, "Last Minute Panic" was released in October 2017 on Honolulu Records.

Catherine Sikora & Brian Chase

Presented in association with Note Productions, the powerful duo of Catherine Sikora (tenor and soprano saxophones) and Brian Chase (drums) pairs up two distinguished voices working at the forefront of modern jazz. At once lyrical and powerful, dynamic and focused, their music opens itself to a wide emotional and conceptual range which in turn provides for a broad expressive palette.

Catherine's voice on her instruments offers an impressive breadth of tonal color, fashioning and re-contextualizing melody as it sings and weaves through its many journeys. Brian on drumset is just as apt to use texture in addition to rhythm to drive the music, setting the scene for unlimited possibilities. The duo's debut recording, untitled:after , is the result of playing and performing together for several years.

Saxophonist, improviser and composer Catherine Sikora was born and raised in West Cork, Self taught to begin with, she moved to New York City to study and play with great improvisers. She recently opened IMC’s BAN BAM festival with an outstanding solo performance.

Brian Chase is a drummer and composer living in Brooklyn. His diverse range of work includes that with Grammy nominated rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the community of the New York experimental music scene, and his solo project Drums & Drones.
