Reviews
Since coming to prominence in the 1980s, Joanna MacGregor has built a formidable reputation as one of the world’s most innovative – and tireless – musicians. A renowned concert pianist lauded for her dazzling technique, irrepressible energy and musical intellect, she is also a highly-respected composer, curator, conductor and teacher.
Throughout her career, MacGregor has repeatedly broken the mould, thanks in part to a hugely diverse repertoire stretching from the Baroque canon to improvised jazz and North American avant-garde. A veteran of over thirty solo recordings, she has collaborated with an amazing array of artists, including Django Bates, Moses Molelekwa, Andy Sheppard, Brian Eno and Nitin Sawhney, as well as performing with such eminent conductors as Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Simon Rattle and Michael Tilson Thomas.
I am a radio presenter so this blog primarily archives the play lists from the current shows that I am involved with in Ireland

IRISH ARTIST
Irish music magazine Hot Press describe David Lyttle as a one-man industry for his work as a recording artist, musician, songwriter, producer and record label owner. His third album Faces features his collaborations with hip hop visionary Talib Kweli, Irish music star Duke Special, iazz icon Joe Lovano, British vocalist Cleveland Watkiss, Rhea Lyttle, Anne Lyttle, Lyte Records artists Jason Rebello and Jean Toussaint, and many more.
David Lyttle guests on this weeks show as we chat about his third album & feature tracks from it & other recordings from Lyte Records.
THE LONG STORY
David Lyttle began performing professionally at the age of four in his folk group the Lyttle Family, playing bongos, bodhrán and mini lambeg drum. At eight years old he added drum kit and by ten years old he was also studying cello and uillean pipes. At eighteen he began focusing on the drum kit after taking an interest in jazz. Over the next three years David received scholarships to study at Skidmore Jazz Institute (New York) and the Banff Centre (Canada), whilst also studying for a BMus at the University of Ulster. After graduating, David was offered a grant to write a PhD thesis at the University of Ulster, becoming a Doctor of Music in 2009.
David first reached a national audience with jazz guitar legend Louis Stewart in 2006. In 2007 he released his first solo album, True Story, on his newly formed label Lyte Records and began featuring international jazz icons in his touring groups, including Greg Osby, Soweto Kinch and Jean Toussaint. From 2007 to 2011 he performed in twelve countries, appearing regularly in New York, Toronto and London. In 2010 he produced the Lyte Records album Questions for the then unknown teenage guitarist Andreas Varady, who is now managed by Quincy Jones.
In 2012 David branched out into hip hop and soul and released his latest album Interlude. First heard on BBC Radio 1's Introducing, it has helped earn him an international reputation as a producer and songwriter, with praise ranging from the Daily Mirror to MOBO, and diverse airplay around the world. Brought to millions by its Channel 4 album advert campaign with HMV, Interlude features David on drums, keyboards, bass, cello and vocals, alongside some of his heroes, contemporaries and family, including sister Rhea, mother Anne, MOBO-winning rapper Soweto Kinch, and session icons Jason Rebello and Pino Palladino. 'David Lyttle & Interlude' performed live dates in Ireland, Britain and the US in 2012 and 2013, with highlight shows at the London Jazz Festival and historic Hollywood music venue The Hotel Cafe.
In June 2013 David released the dance single 'Celebrate' with Interlude vocalist Rhea, Northern Irish recording artist Duke Special and the percussionists of Beat Carnival, a Belfast arts organisation where David was the 2013 musician in residence. The track was playlisted by the majority of Ireland's commercial radio stations.
David's third album Faces will be released February 23rd. It features his collaborations with hip hop visionary Talib Kweli, Grammy winning saxophone icon Joe Lovano, Irish music star Duke Special, forward-thinking British vocalist Cleveland Watkiss, family members Rhea Lyttle, Anne Lyttle and Jan Hutchinson; rappers Illspokinn, Homecut and Zane; Lyte Records jazz artists Jason Rebello, Jean Toussaint, John Leighton, Michael Buckley and Tom Harrison; soul singer Natalie Oliveri, bassist Keith Duffy of The Corrs, saxophonist/arranger Meilana Gillard and rising Irish session star Eoin Walsh. Recorded in New York, London, Dublin and Lyttle's home studio in Co. Armagh over the course of a year, Faces is his most diverse and anticipated album to date.
