Dublinjazz.ie in association with Teddy D Promotions ltd. are proud to present Shalosh, one of the most energetic bands on the European circuit today. Over the last two years the band have had a meteoric rise which see them playing in Dublin for the first time followed by a double appearance in London’s Ronnie Scott’s and Paris’s Duc Des Lombards. A powerful rhythmical sound built on a jazz foundation. Shalosh is an up and coming force in the international jazz scene, with close to one hundred international concerts in 2015-16. The genre-bending, Acoustic, Progressive, raw Jazz band, has been turning heads of audiences internationally since the release of their debut album “The Bell Garden” in March 2014. Despite the classic Jazz trio format (piano, bass and drums) and the band members’ deep root in Jazz and improvised music. Shalosh’s music takes its own path across and between genres like Rock, Classical, Electronic, African and Middle Eastern music. The members of Shalosh have a connection not only through music, but also through a lifelong friendship. After years of working separately and internationally, both as sidemen as well as bandleaders, the three reunited to form a band with a tight-knit style of their own. In the past two years, Shalosh has generated a huge buzz around the world. Their music has grabbed attention in Europe, Japan, U.S.A and South America, and has been marked by the press, as one of the most prominent promising sounds of years to come. The band has toured in Japan, Korea, UK, Germany, Poland, The Czech Republic, Latvia. Belgium, France, Romania, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Albania, Holland, Turkey and Israel, and is planned to have shows USA and Canada in 2017-18 as well. In March 31st 2016 Shalosh embarked on a two months long tour, with 40 concerts all across Europe, promoting the music of their new album Rules Of Oppression (will be released January 2017, on contemplate records) This new album took the band’s sound another step forward in the creation of their unique voice. The band’s agenda is to make music that moves its audience in the greatest way possible, in order to break through the barrier created between the music and the listener, which is often found in intellectual music of this genre. Shalosh places as much emphasis on their collective sound as on individual virtuosity. Their music is derived from a deep place of musical friendship and is aimed towards the deepest and purest place within. Shalosh very much stands out from today’s Jazz scene, mainly due to the fact it is not led by a single artist, but co-led by its three members who enjoy an artistic evolution from years of collaborations and friendship. Moreover, for the past two years, the band released their first album and booked over 100 shows under their own management and label.
“…blending all sorts of cultural and rhythmic references without obscuring strong melodies, catchy hooks and refreshing grooves.” – London Jazz News
“… the music is so perfect that it’s almost enough to make you reflect on fate and destiny.” – All About Jazz

May 24th: On this Day
1956, The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Lugano, Switzerland. The event was the brainchild of Marcel Baisoncon of the European Broadcasting Union. Seven countries participated and they were each allowed two songs. Both Luxembourg and the winner Switzerland used the same singer for both. Switzerland won with 'Refrain' by Lys Assia.
1962, Elvis Presley was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Good Luck Charm' his 11th UK No.1 single. It completed his second hat-trick of chart topping singles in the UK.
1963, US blues guitarist and singer Elmore James died of a heart attack aged 45. James wrote 'Shake Your Money Maker', which was covered by Fleetwood Mac in 1968. Known as "The King of the Slide Guitar", James influenced Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Keith Richards.
1963, The Beatles recorded the first of their very own BBC radio program, "Pop Go the Beatles". The theme song for the program was a version of "Pop Goes the Weasel". The Beatles' guests for this first show were the Lorne Gibson Trio.
1966, Captain Beefheart appeared at the Whisky a Go Go. West Hollywood, California. Supported by Buffalo Springfield and The Doors.
1968, The Rolling Stones released the single 'Jumpin Jack Flash' in the UK, the track gave them their seventh UK No.1 hit. Keith Richards has stated that he and Jagger wrote the lyrics while staying at Richards' country house, where they were awoken one morning by the sound of gardener Jack Dyer walking past the window. When Jagger asked what the noise was, Richards responded: "Oh, that's Jack – that's jumpin' Jack."
1969, Bob Dylan's album Nashville Skyline peaked at No.3 in the US chart. The singer's ninth album, it also scored Dylan his fourth UK No.1. The album featured 'Lay Lady Lay', which became one of Dylan's biggest pop hits, reaching No.7 in the US, his biggest single in three years.
1969, The Beatles with Billy Preston started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Get Back', the group's 17th US No.1. Credited to "The Beatles with Billy Preston", it was the Beatles' only single that credited another artist, 'Get Back' was also the Beatles' first single release in true stereo in the US.
1970, Peter Green played his last gig with Fleetwood Mac when they appeared at the Bath Festival, Somerset, England.
1974, American composer, pianist, and bandleader Duke Ellington, died of lung cancer and pneumonia aged 75. Worked with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday. Awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966. In 2009 the United States Mint launched a new coin featuring Duke Ellington on the reverse side of the coin.
1974, David Bowie released his eighth studio album Diamond Dogs. The cover art features Bowie as a striking half-man, half-dog grotesque painted by Belgian artist Guy Peellaert. It was controversial as the full painting clearly showed the hybrid's genitalia.
1975, Earth Wind and Fire went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Shining Star', the group's first and only US No.1.

1963, The first Monterey Folk Festival took place over three days in Monterey, California. The festival featured Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Peter Paul and Mary. The 1967 Monterey Rock festival is remembered for the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix and The Who as well as the first major public performances of Janis Joplin. It was also the first major performance by Otis Redding in front of a predominantly white audience.
1964, Bob Dylan made his first major concert UK appearance when he played at the Royal Festival Hall in London with an afternoon show listed as a ‘Folksong Concert’. Dylan's 18-song set included the live debut of Mr. Tambourine Man and took place on a Sunday afternoon. In the interval, Dylan received a telegram from John Lennon seeking a meeting which never materialised.
1966, During a UK tour, Bob Dylan appeared at The Free Trade Hall in Manchester. This was the concert where a member of the audience shouted out ‘Judas’ at Dylan unhappy with the singers move from acoustic to rock. Dylan replied with ‘You’re a liar’, the entire concert was eventually officially released in The Bootleg Series by Sony Music in 1999.
1967, The Tremeloes were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of a Four Seasons song, (the B-side to Rag Doll), 'Silence Is Golden', the group's only UK No.1."Silence Is Golden" is a song co-written by Bob Gaudio of the American rock band, The Four Seasons, with Bob Crewe. It was released as a B-side to the hit song "Rag Doll," in 1964. This song was originally made and sung by The Four Seasons.
1967, Working at Abbey Road studios The Beatles began recording a new John Lennon song ‘You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)’. The song was not finished until November 1969, and was not released until March 1970 (as the B-side of the ‘Let it Be’ single).
1969, It was reported that for the first time ever album sales had overtaken single sales in the UK. 49,184,000 albums were produced during 1968 compared with 49,161,000 singles.

Ruba Shamshoum - 'Shamat' Album Launch Gig
25 Wexford St, Dublin 2, Ireland - Whelan's
25 May. 2017 Start Time 20:00 End Time 23:00 Ticket Cost € 11 / 16 Book Tickets
On May 25th, Palestinian vocalist, Ruba Shamshoum will launch her debut album ‘Shamat’ (Beauty Spots) at Whelan’s - upstairs. Ruba’s music draws from the harmony, sensibility, improvisation and playfulness of jazz, mixed with tinges of Middle Eastern and Arabic musical elements, that compliment her style. Ruba sings in both Arabic and English, and uses music to deal with identity, anger, lack of communication, fear and love.
2016 was a great year for Ruba’s music; playing international festivals, giving a TED talk at TEDx London Business School, and recording her first album with acclaimed musicians.
Line-up
Orlando Molina (Venezuela) - guitar Barry Rycraft (Ireland) - double bass Matthew Jacobson (Ireland) - drums
Aleka Potinga (Romania) - cello Matthew Berrill (Ireland) - clarinet
“Ruba’s songs have strong narratives about exile, hope and love. Her distinct jazz influences allowed space to flourish with a band drawn from the elite of the Dublin jazz scene.” - Hot Press
